Whoever knew Hip Hop would take it this far. NWA biopic “Straight Outta Compton” topped the box office this past weekend with $56.1 million, CNN Money reports.
The film had a production budget of $29 million. The opening weekend numbers exceeded the expectations of Universal, which predicted “a very conservative $25 to $30 million opening,” according to Fox News.
The R-rated film chronicles the rise of one of Hip Hop’s most controversial groups in the 1980s. It stars O’Shea Jackson Jr. as his father Ice Cube; Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre; Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E; Aldis Hodge as MC Ren and Neil Brown Jr. as DJ Yella.
Cube and Dre served as the film’s producers.
