Young Chop On Drill Music: ‘We Just Telling The Truth’

Young Chop is regarded as one of the driving forces behind Chicago’s growing music scene.

The music scene in the Windy City has been coined “Drill Music.” But with a slew of artists coming out of the Chi with diverse styles, it can be hard categorize what exactly is drill.

Chop told Hip Hop DX he no longer knows what Drill Music is. But what he does know is the music is honest. Chop expressed his thoughts on whether the genre is contributing to the violence in the Chi.

“I don’t even know what Drill music is, but whatever they think it is we just telling the truth,” he explained. “Everything that’s in the raps is the truth of what’s going on in the streets of Chicago right now. Whatever they portray it is, that’s what it is to them. I can’t change nobody way of thinking.”

Chop explained the origins of Drill Music in Noisey’s “Chiraq” documentary.

Chop said the genre was first called “dead music.”

“…Cause everything they talking about, they shooting guns,” Chop explained. “People dying everyday. It’s just real life, that’s how people related to it.”

“Before the drill music, it was drill,” he continued. “Everything was a drill.”
