Rhymefest: ‘Growing Up In Chicago Is a Mixture of Every Human Experience’

Chicago artist Che “Rhymefest” Smith discussed the culture of Chicago in “Murder to Excellence: Life & Hip Hop in Chicago” documentary.

“Growing up in Chicago is a mixture of every human experience,” he said. “We’re like the home of the blues. The house of house music. The consciousness of Hip Hop.”

That all comes from a blue-collar background, he added.

The “Blue Collar” rapper went on to describe the “Great Migration” that brought many African Americans to the Windy City.

“The history of Chicago is most of parents or grandparents are from the South,” he said. “They from Mississippi; they from Arkansas. But we have a southern experience in a big city.”

Today, Rhymefest said, Chicago is kinda like 1990s South.

“The rap scene is kinda like you seeing dudes wearing dreads; you seeing dudes sippin’ syrup; you see dudes doing things I remember Lil’ Jon doing or Pimp C doing,” he said. “But not necessarily things that coincide with the history of Chicago.”
