J. Cole recorded “Let Nas Down” after learning his single “Work Out” disappointed fans, as well as street poet Nas.

During an interview with Power 105’s “The Breakfast Club,” Cole told the listeners he learned from producer No ID that Nas was unhappy with his lead single for “Cole World: The Sideline Story.”

“I was with Nas and Nas was talking about you,” Cole recalled No ID as saying. “Why did he do that? Don’t he know he’s the one?”

Those words stuck with the North Carolina native.

“When he told me that, it hurt and I never forgot it,” he explained. “A year and a half later I made that song. I didn’t know I was going to make the song. I just made the beat, started writing and that’s what came out.”

Three days making the song, Cole continued, he bumped into Mr. Illmatic himself in a Houston airport. Cole let the Nas listen to the song while they were onboard their flight.

“I played him the song and he flipped,” Cole said.
