Member Of Alpha Kappa Alpha Dies From Gunshot Wound To Head During Gang Crossfire In Chicago



A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was tragically murdered in Chicago Wednesday, May 28 after she was struck by a stray bullet during gang crossfire.

Betty Howard, 58, was shot in the head after a bullet ripped through her wall as she conversing with a co-worker inside a real estate building on the 700 block of East 79th street, according to ABC Chicago. Two others were also shot and are recovering from injuries.

Howard taught special education at Brooks College Prep on the city’s South Side, Chicago Sun-Times reports. Brooks College Prep students honored Howard by releasing pink and green balloons, the colors of AKA, according to The AP.

Howard was a devout Christian woman and was the ‘first lady’ of New Light Holiness Church where her husband of five years, the Rev.Major Howard is pastor, according to Chicago Sun Times.

Howard had two sons and two grandchildren.

Fourteen people were shot in total during the bloody day of shootings, three dying from their wounds, according to Chicago Tribune.
