Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Inducts Angela Bassett & Susan L. Taylor As Honorary Members

Washington D.C. officially belongs to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as the nation’s largest African American sorority celebrates its 51st National Convention.

The event is especially special for thousands of its members as they continue the celebration of the sorority’s 100-year anniversary.

The Crimson and Cream sorority, founded at Howard University on Jan. 13, 1913, held their annual Honorary member ceremony Saturday where several women who have exemplified excellence in their careers and work were inducted.

The women inducted include renowned actress Angela Bassett; former editor-in-chief of Essence Magazine Susan L. Taylor; Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Susan Johnson Cooke; engineer Lisa Jackson; journalist Paula Madison; and humanitarian Tererai Trent.

Bassett took to social media to express her enthusiasm about her induction.

“Thank you to the dynamic women of @DSTinc1913! I am honored as one of your newest Sorors! #DST100YEARS,” she wrote.

Bassett took several photographs with her sorority sisters.

“A Soror ‘Selfie’ w/#SusanLTaylor at our induction into @DSTinc1913!” she wrote on her Twitter account.

Bassett even took a photo with fellow actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who was inducted as an honorary member in July 2004 at the 47th National Convention in Las Vegas, NV.

The sorority’s national president, Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre, issued a statement in honor of the Centennial Convention:

“This is not only a momentous occasion for our organization, but a testament to the power of all women determined to change the world for the better and be a voice for the underprivileged and underserved,” she wrote. “The accomplishments of Delta Sigma Theta over the past 100 years give us many reasons to be thankful and require us to pause to pay tribute to our Founders, past leadership, and all those who have helped us along our journey. One year of celebrating those successes may not be long enough to honor those who came before us. It will take a lifetime to truly give them and our Founders the honor they deserve.”

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which boasts more than 900 chapters worldwide, aims to promote academic excellence, provide scholarships, provide support to the underserved, educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy and highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities.
