Jamie Rohrs Hugs Deidre Brooks
Patricia Legarreta and her two small children may not be alive if it weren’t for the heroic efforts of a Colorado teenager.
Jarell Brooks, 19, was shot in the leg as he attempted to pull Legarreta and her family to safety early Friday morning at a Dark Knight movie screening after a deranged gunman opened fire on innocent moviegoers.
Legarreta and her family joined Jarell Brooks’ parents for a day of worship Sunday at a small Colorado church, ABC News reports. Brooks’ parents Jeffrey and Deidra Brooks invited the family of Patricia Legarreta to New Life Worship Center in Commerce City, where Brook’s father is the pastor.
Brooks did not attend the service because he was recuperating from his injuries. But Legarreta’s mother, fiancé Jamie Rohrs and two children were in attendance for a day of spiritual healing.
Jeffrey Brooks told his 40-member congregation he doesn’t “know how long it’ll take for the hurt and pain to end,” but he does know “everything will be alright” if everyone puts their “trust in God,” according to ABC News.
“I’m glad New Life is not planning a funeral this morning,” he said. “It could have been worse.”
Jeffrey and Deidre Brooks brought Legarreta and her family to the front of the church, where Rohrs became overcome with emotion as Deidre hugged him tight.
“We’ll be here for you,” Pastor Brooks told the family. “You don’t get much closer than that.”
Rohrs told ABC “it felt really good to just hear encouraging words from the pastor and it’s a blessing just to be able to praise God.”
