A 13-year-old girl has been tried as a juvenile in the stabbing death of 16-year-old De’Kayla Dansberry in Parkway Gardens, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

The girl, who has not been named, and her mother, accompanied by an attorney, turned themselves into authorities Tuesday. The mother is accused of providing the knife used in the fatal stabbing.

Dekayla was a freshman at Johnson College Prep where she was on the track team. She was to compete at the state meet later this week at Eastern Illinois University.

“It was some type of dispute that turned physical, and it turned into a large group watching them fight. And the other girl pulled out a knife and stabbed her,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Chicago Sun Times. “Several people have been questioned, but no one was in custody Sunday afternoon.”

Friends and family held a vigil in Dekayla’s honor Sunday afternoon.
