Slain Chicago Teen, Arrell Monegan, Loved To Bop To P. Rico’s ‘Hang With Me’

A South Side Chicago teen had plans of enjoying himself at a Saturday night party.

But 16-year-old Arrell Monegan’s plans never materialized after he was shot dead at 7 p.m., March 16 in the 2400 block of West 58th Street, according to a police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Monegan was standing with two friends when an unknown gunman emerged from a gangway and opened fire.

Monegan, who was shot in the shoulder and back, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital an hour later, according to DNAInfo.com.

His death was ruled a homicide.

Angel Morgan, Monegan’s 18-year-old older sister, recalled her brother as a “sweet, kindhearted” kid, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“His goal really was to get his family off the streets,” Morgan said. “He liked being with his friends all the time.”

Monegan’s friend ShaRoyce Orr told the Sun-Times the teen, who was affectionately known as “Ace Boogie,” was a very prolific bopper and his dance song of choice was rising Chicago artist P. Rico’s track “Hang With Me.”

Boppin’ is a dance that has its origins in Chicago.

The “Bop” has undergone many transformations throughout several generations. Originally performed in the late 50s and early 60s, the “Bop” was a smooth, calm dance of striding, gliding, dipping and dabbing, according to steppersexpress.com.

In today’s generation amongst a younger, hip demographic, the “Bop” now is performed to Hip Hop music. It incorporates a “bounce” with slick footwork and various body movements.

“If they played his favorite song, he would just get up and start dancing and then encourage the rest of us,” Orr said. “He would just get up and start boppin’ and tell everyone to follow him.”

Friends and family created a Facebook page for Monegan titled “In Memory of Arrell Monegan.”

Monegan’s killer is still at-large. Anyone with information on the murder of Monegan is urged to contact the Chicago Police Department at 312.746.4276.
